Floating Solar Panels – A Unique way to Clean Energy

Floating Solar Panels
July 22, 2021

Imagine a huge water bed generating electricity. Yes, it is possible. Floating PV plants can be installed on water bodies of dams, reservoirs, canals etc. Floating panels have proved to be more efficient and energy generating compared to roof top and ground mounting panels.

Due to the cooling effect beneath the panels the efficiency of solar panels has boosted up by 12.5%. Surprisingly, new research indicates meticulously designed floating solar farms could actually reduce the alarming warnings caused by climate change to lakes and reservoirs.

How Does Floating Solar Work?

Floating solar, also known as floating photovoltaics (FPV), takes the idea of traditional solar panels and places them on floating platforms over water. This clever setup not only saves land space but also improves efficiency. Because the panels sit close to water, they stay cooler and perform better, even under hot conditions.

A great example of this in action is RWE’s floating solar plant at the Amer power station in the Netherlands. The project uses 13,400 solar modules with a total capacity of 6.1 MWp, producing clean electricity for the grid. To keep everything secure, the floating platforms are anchored to 52 heavy concrete blocks at the bottom of the lake—each weighing 4.6 tonnes. Around 25 kilometres of cable carry the generated electricity onshore and feed it into the power network.

Floating Solar: A New Chapter for Clean Energy

Floating PV plants are an exciting innovation in renewable energy. Instead of installing panels on land, they are placed on lakes, reservoirs, and other bodies of water. This makes it possible to expand solar power without competing for valuable land space.

The global adoption of floating solar is growing rapidly. By 2021, installed capacity had already surpassed two gigawatts worldwide, according to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). Yet, this is just the beginning—the potential is far greater.

Unlike large land-based solar farms, which need vast areas, floating solar offers a unique solution for densely populated regions where space is limited but energy demand is high. For countries like Australia, where many artificial reservoirs and water bodies are available, floating solar could become a game-changer in boosting renewable energy capacity while helping combat climate change.

Australia’s largest floating solar farm – Lismore NSW

Did you know? Australia’s largest floating solar farm is in Lismore, New South Wales. It produces 1, 80,000 of electricity annually, using a 100KW solar system and it accounts for 12% of the plant’s energy needs. The project was also a part of the plan to tackle climate change.

The Lismore council community is aiming at generating all its electricity through renewable sources by 2023. You can be a part of the revolution by employing the sun to generate electricity. Your roof can make you money. Speak to Solar Miner experts today to go green and generate free electricity.

Floating solar farm is an environmental solution

Installing solar panels out on unused water bodies reduces the need for tree removal and forest clearing. When you want to make large solar panel installations and save valuable land space, installations on water bodies is the solution. It is an environment friendly solution as it helps reduce greenhouse gases and also provides reliable energy performance due to cooling effect.
