Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has published a new report stating solar customers in the national electricity market are paying about 30% less for their electricity than their non-solar counterparts. ACCC’s latest report has revealed that COVID-19 changed electricity usage patterns and bills in 2020. For residential customers, usage went up 10% and bills went up 7% from the previous year. For small business customers, usage went down 17% and bills went down 16%.
Thanks to Feed-in-tariff (FIT) payments, homes and businesses with solar PV paid lower electricity bills than non-solar customers; earning through exporting electricity generated by their solar panels to the grid. Early solar adopters earned the highest rebates but newer solar customers supplied more electricity to the grid.
“COVID-19 had a major effect on electricity use last year. Many households that were already experiencing financial difficulty had higher electricity bills to pay, and although lower bills for small businesses would normally be something to celebrate, it wasn’t a welcome outcome in the context of a pandemic recession,” ACCC Chair Rod Sims said.
